Quantum Computing

At the heart of a quantum computer is the qubit, which is often represented by subatomic particles such as photons, electrons, or ions. Unlike regular bits that can only be in one state (0 or 1), a qubit can exist in both states simultaneously. This unique ability lets quantum computers perform multiple operations at the same time, leading to larger and faster computations. Entanglement is another key concept in quantum computing. It occurs when two or more qubits become linked, causing their states to be correlated. This means that the state of one qubit can affect the state of another, no matter how far apart they are. Entanglement is what enables quantum computers to carry out certain calculations way faster than conventional computers.

Lastly, quantum computers use special quantum algorithms which are distinct from conventional algorithms employed in classical computers. By leveraging the parallel processing capabilities of qubits and the power of entanglement, these quantum algorithms can handle tasks like searching massive databases or factoring large numbers at incredible speeds compared to classical methods. Maintaining the coherence of the qubits is one of the most difficult issues in developing a workable quantum computer. The capacity of qubits to remain in a superposition state for a certain period of time before collapsing to a classical state is referred to as quantum coherence. When the coherence time is too short, doing computations with the qubits becomes problematic. Researchers are researching on strategies to increase the coherence duration of qubits, such as applying error correction codes or producing better qubit materials.
